OLBB History
Operation Loaded Book Bag was started to help those in our community who may need a little help getting the school supplies that are needed for them to start school and succeed. OLBB was started as a Girl Scout Gold Award by my daughter Kaity Traughber back in 2014. Since then we have provided school supplies for anywhere from 50 to over 200 students every year since. In 2019 we took over the Sertoma Club’s First Day Fund that supplied students with school supplies.
Any student who needs school supplies will receive the needed supplies that are required supply so they can concentrate on their school work and not have to worry about getting the supplies they need. The loaded book bags will be delivered to the school so the students can pick them up. Money is tight for more and more families. It is harder for them to provide the needed school supplies that their children need for school. This will be a continuing event through the year. Our goal is to collect school supplies for the grade school students, but I need your help! As for high school students we will supply the basics: paper, folders, pens, paper as we do not have a supply list for those grades. It will cover the basic school supplies like pens, pencils, 2 pocket folders, loose leaf paper, spiral bound notebooks, erasers, boxes of tissues, rulers, notebooks, art sketch books & book bags of all kinds.
Even after school starts there are items that students need that their families are unable to purchase because of their financial situation. There is no need for these families to feel ashamed for them participating in Operation Loaded Book Bag because the success of the student in school out weights everything else. If we do not help students, the worry of not being able to receive the supplies, they need for school affects their ability to do well in school.
This is where I need your help. Students and their families who are having trouble financially can contact OLBB through Facebook or call me at 217-825-6824 and leave a message. It does not stop there! Your school will be supplied with my phone number, a Wish List flyer, all your students will need to do is put what they need on the wish list (or they can contact me directly to request the school supplies: these supplies do have to be something the student needs to participate in school). All they need to do is put it on the list with their name and the school supply that they need. It is that simple.
This is the 9th year for Operation Loaded Book Bag. We are expanding to other towns around Taylorville, include, Kincaid & Morrisonville and we will do our best make sure that all who need help.
